He turned and said to Peter, ‘Get behind Me, Satan! You are an offense to Me’.  Matthew 16:23

Not half a dozen verses previous to this, in reply to Peter’s great statement concerning Christ: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God” (v. 16), the Lord was saying to Peter, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar—Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven” (v. 17). But He who was the Light, is, and ever will be the Light, never covered wrong at the expense of His holiness. So when he detects the work of the Devil in what, humanly speaking, was loving sympathy on the part of Peter, the Lord strictly rebukes him.

O Lord, make me this consistent.  Amen.
